“The Shock Doctrine”

Disaster Capitalism

Naomi Klein is a Canadian born writer, journalist and activist. She is a fierce critic of corporate globalization who has written many articles and several books about the topic. Among her works are, the book “No Logo” has received much praise and accolade for its exposition of corporate exploitation and is seen as a manifest for the anti globalization movement around the world.

In her latest book, “The Shock Doctrine” Naomi shows how shock therapy is used as a method of controlling large groups of people and even take over a country. Naomi Klein lays out the most sensible explanation to date for the Bush administration’s invasion and occupation of Iraq. After watching this short documentary, it becomes clear that democracy and the “free market economy” are contradictory concepts or oxymoron.

This doctrine of shock therapy originated from one of the Godfathers of “free market” or “laissez faire” economy, Milton Friedman. Friedman argued that a non-regulated economy, where market conditions rather than government regulation provided the most viable economic environment for society. But instead of allowing the theory to work and prove for itself in a free and unbiased environment, Friedman devised a shrewd way of implementing this theory into action with another theory called ‘shock therapy. Although this theory has failed in almost every level, ranging from a city like New Orleans to a country like Chile and Iraq so far, its advocates such as Dick Cheney, GW Bush, Don Rumsfeld, and Paul Bremer are still trying to ram it into the world population.

The short but remarkable video below by Naomi Klein tells the story about the doctrine.
