What has this world come to?

Atrocities in Lebanon

It is very difficult to put into words what has been taking place in Lebanon the last 3 weeks.  Putting the politics and the generation old dispute between the states involved aside for a moment, how is it that war crimes like the one that took place in Qana, Lebanon this past weekend allowed to happen with nothing more than very few condemning voices here in the US? Is this how the ‘civilized' West handles disputes between nations?  If so, where does the 'civilized West' get its moral authority to call others,  ‘uncivilized' or ‘backward' or 'terrorists'? How is it that the Western world is so indifferent to these atrocities committed by the Israelis on innocent civilians?  What is the world coming to? Instead of playing the peacemaker, what does the US do?  The US administration refuses to call for a cease-fire, and instead sends...no wait, expedites  the delivery of more bombs to Israel so they can kill more innocent children.   We know that throughout the years the US foreign policy has created more harm than good in many parts of the world.  But nothing like what this administration is doing has ever been seen before.  And this is the same administration that most of the Ethiopian 'intellectual' Diaspora is desperately trying hitch its wagon to so it will solve our problems back home.  Woe unto us...woe unto us and our people if these same people do take us seriously and decide to ‘help' us.

Below is a link to the story of the massacre by Robert Fisk of The Independent, and if you have the stomach for it, some pictures of the aftermath in Qana from BBC.

A few excerpts from the article.

They wrote the names of the dead children on their plastic shrouds. " Mehdi Hashem, aged seven Qana," was written in felt pen on the bag in which the little boy's body lay. "Hussein al-Mohamed, aged 12 Qana", "Abbas al-Shalhoub, aged one Qana.'' And when the Lebanese soldier went to pick up Abbas's little body, it bounced on his shoulder as the boy might have done on his father's shoulder on Saturday.

And there was no doubt of the missile which killed all those children yesterday. It came from the United States, and upon a fragment of it was written: "For use on MK-84 Guided Bomb BSU-37-B". No doubt the manufacturers can call it "combat-proven" because it destroyed the entire three-storey house in which the Shalhoub and Hashim families lived. They had taken refuge in the basement from an enormous Israeli bombardment, and that is where most of them died.

1 - Chereka- Great article. Those pictures are horrifying!!

Did you know the southern Lebanese town of Qana is believed to be where Jesus performed his first miracle (at the wedding mentioned in the Gospels??) Isn't it sad nowdays it is blood - not water and wine - that is indelibly linked with the town?? (Comment this)
